Give as directed by your veterinarian. Follow the instructions printed on the prescription label. Store doxycycline at room temperature. Be sure to complete the prescription to ensure a full recovery, even if your pet seems to be improving, unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Allow your pet access to plenty of water. Doxycycline can be given with or without food but should not be given with dairy products.
Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use in animals with a known sensitivity to doxycycline. Do not use in pregnant animals. Let your veterinarian know if your pet is on any other medications, as interactions with certain medicines can occur. Do not administer any calcium-containing medications, antacids, laxatives, or multivitamins within 2 hours of the last doxycycline dose. Notify your veterinarian if your animal suffers from kidney or liver disease. Doxycycline may increase skins sensitivity to sunlight. Store at room temperature. Allergic reactions and serious side effects are rare, but in the case of an allergic reaction or a serious side effect you should stop doxycycline treatment and seek veterinary attention. Some common signs of allergic reactions and serious side effects are hives, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, loss of appetite, or dark colored urine.

Doxycycline should not be used in animals allergic to it or other tetracycline antibiotics. Use with caution in animals with impaired liver or kidney function. Preventing malaria

Awareness of risk – find out whether you’re at risk of getting malaria before travelling Bite prevention – avoid mosquito bites by using insect repellent, covering your arms and legs, and using an insecticide-treated mosquito net Check whether you need to take malaria prevention tablets – if you do, make sure you take the right antimalarial tablets at the right dose, and finish the course Diagnosis – seek immediate medical advice if you develop malaria symptoms, as long as up to a year after you return from travelling
Side effects
Like all medicines, doxycycline can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
Common side effects These common side effects happen in around 1 in 10 people. Keep taking the medicine, but talk to your doctor or pharmacist if these side effects bother you or don’t go away:
a headache feeling sick or vomiting being sensitive to sunlight Serious side effects Serious side effects are rare and happen in less than 1 in 1,000 people.
Call a doctor straight away if you get:
Bruising or bleeding you can’t explain (including nosebleeds), a sore throat, a high temperature (38C or above) and you feel tired or generally unwell – these can be signs of blood problems.
Severe diarrhoea (perhaps with stomach cramps) that contains blood or mucus, or lasts longer than 4 days ringing or buzzing in your ears
Serious skin reactions or rashes, including irregular, round red patches, peeling, blisters, skin ulcers, or swelling of the skin that looks like burns – these could be signs of a rare reaction to the medicine called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome
Yellow skin or the whites of your eyes go yellow – this could be a sign of liver problems joint or muscle pain that has started since you began taking doxycycline
Headache, vomiting and problems with your vision – these could be signs of pressure around your brain (intracranial hypertension)
A fingernail coming away from its base – this could be a reaction to sunlight called photo-onycholysis
A sore or swollen mouth, lips or tongue
Severe pain in your tummy, with or without bloody diarrhoea, feeling sick and being sick – these can be signs of pancreatitis difficulty or pain when you swallow, a sore throat, acid reflux, a smaller appetite or chest pain which gets worse when you eat – these could be signs of an inflamed food pipe (oesophagitis) or oesophageal ulcer
Serious allergic reactions
Allergic reactions to doxycycline are common and occur in more than 1 in 100 people.
These are not all the side effects of doxycycline.

Could I take doxycycline for a long time?
No. Doxycycline is a penicillin antibiotic that can be expensive.
Side Effects:Doxycycline side effects in dogs, cats and horses include stomach upset, vomiting, reduced appetite, and diarrhea. Giving doxycycline with food may help alleviate these GI effects. Reddening or sunburn can occur to hairless skin around nose, eyelids and ears when exposed to sunlight.Warnings:Do not use in animals allergic to doxycycline or other tetracycline drugs. Use with caution in animals with liver problems. Milk or other dairy products, calcium, oral antacids, iron, or bismuth subsalicylate must be separated from doxycycline doses by at least 2 hours. Overdoses can be very dangerous. Keep out of reach of children and animals. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once. This medication should only be given to the pet for whom it was prescribed.

If you notice any other effects than those listed as side effects, contact your veterinarian immediately.Use with caution in animals allergic to tetracycline-class drugs. Doxycycline can interact with other drugs your veterinarian is taking sildenafil. Use only as directed. Do not use on animals with known sensitivity to doxycycline or other tetracyclines.
